Building Backlinks With Directories

Posted by mudac on May 30, 2008

First, before we begin:

What is a backlink? : A backlink is a link on another website that points back to you .

When you first enter the world of being a web-master you will begin completely clueless. One mistake that a lot of web-masters make is not properly advertising their websites. I consider building backlinks in directories advertising, most however will disagree that it is search engine optimization. Here is why I disagree, when you submit your website to a directory and it is accepted– you have just earned yourself a backlink, yes, but you have also earned yourself a decent size spot on a web page that people will be looking at.

One of the few pulls that directories have anymore is backlinks. This is the cause and effect of search engines. Directories were around before search engines, directories are like the phone book—they only give out information if you know what you are looking for. The only problem now is that directories have hundreds of links and unless your looking for a broad range of items, it will be like finding a needle in a haystack. The limited exposure a directory gives you is good though, because it helps and everyone knows every little bit helps.

Submitting your site to just one directory will not help you though. You must submit your site(s) to hundreds of directories. There is entire websites dedicated to directory lists. In fact, there is directories of directories.

The reason backlinks have become important is due to search engine rankings. Most search engines now have themselves a ranking system that takes into account a bunch of different statistics to spit out a pagerank(what we call a PR). One of the statistics used has been proven to be a backlink. It takes a few hours of submitting to build up a decent amount of backlinks. After about 200 you can stop for a few days or so, until your content is really getting rolled out.
